Legislators hope to alter language in the Federal Aviation Administration’s reauthorization bill to include greater wiggle room for state-based influence, arguing that the federal government isn’t best poised to regulate drones, The Hill reports. “Reckless drone use varies significantly in different states and even within a state, which is why we need to maintain the ability for states to set their own standards of drone operation,” said author of one of the proposed drone bill amendments, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. Not everyone agrees, arguing that a “patchwork” regulatory approach will undercut industry innovation. “There are some industries and areas that require uniformity with a federal approach, and U.S. airspace is one of them,” said the Small UAV Coalition’s Michael Drobac, CIPP/US, CIPT.
