  • Regulations that take effect Friday requiring restaurants in Ontario to collect names and contact information of diners for contact-tracing purposes are raising privacy concerns, CBC News reports.
  • CBC News also reports McInnes Cooper Partner David Fraser, encouraging download of Canada’s COVID Alert app, said it does not collect personally identifiable information, noting he has never “seen a piece of software more thoroughly scrutinized.”
  • Also related to the COVID Alert app, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario said they support its use after a review.
  • The OPC said, however, it is possible the new COVID Alert app could allow some who test positive for the virus to be identified, CBC News reports.
  • The Star reports the contact-tracing app has been downloaded by 3.42% of Canadians, while experts said at least 60% of a population is needed for the app to be effective.
