Pittsburgh city council has tentatively approved a proposal that would allow two city departments to enter into agreements with “various entities” to receive data that furthers the city’s ability to deliver services to residents, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The data includes traffic information from Waze and Uber that the city council says will help with infrastructure planning. The council's lone holdout, Councilwoman Deb Gross, says the legislation, as currently written, gives wide-open authorization to city departments to enter into agreements with data companies without first requiring council approval. Council members agree more data leads to better public policy, but Gross would like to narrow the scope of the legislation before the final vote Tuesday.
