Wired reports on the rollout of a facial-recognition tool designed to help schools prevent gun violence. The software, called SAFR, is available to school administrators as a free download, which can be integrated with existing camera systems. One of the people behind the rollout, Rob Glaser, said, "We feel like we're hitting something there can be a social consensus around: that using facial recognition technology to make schools safer is a good thing." The move, however, has prompted concerns about the loss of privacy and surveillance of students. "The use of facial recognition in schools creates an unprecedented level of surveillance and scrutiny," Legal Defense Fund Fellow John Cusick said.
