Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., introduced the DATA Privacy Act, a rule created to prohibit tech companies from sending targeted ads that discriminate against protected groups, The Verge reports. The proposed bill would allow the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to create the definitions for what it considers to be discriminatory behavior and grant the agency extended powers to pursue violations of the act. Under the DATA Privacy Act, platforms would be required to be more transparent about the ways they collect, store and process user data. According to the bill, platforms must allow data subjects to opt out of any activities that involve their information.
