Fast Company reports that Consumer Reports is rolling out Digital Lab, a new investigative entity that examines and rates the data privacy features of web-based products and services. Digital Lab's analysis will focus on areas of privacy, transparency, security and data collection methods. “You can’t overlook the incredible change in the marketplace and in products and services that consumers are really trying to navigate,” Consumer Reports President and CEO Marta Tellado said. “And I think now more than ever, they’re looking for a trusted and independent partner that can provide a road map.” The new venture has the backing of Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark, who pledged $6 million to the cause and will serve as an honorary chair to an advisory council that will help Digital Lab grow.
