As protest surveillance ramps up in the U.S., Consumer Reports published suggested privacy-preserving measures for protesters. Disabling location tracking, as well as securing cellphone access and messaging channels, is among the recommendations. "Some degree of anonymity is absolutely necessary to allow us to express ourselves and take a stance without fear of unfair retribution," Consumer Reports Director of Privacy and Technology Policy Justin Brookman said. "People have every right to be concerned about abuse of personal information to deter or punish dissent."
