The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office said it is following up on complaints made against the HM Revenue and Customs’ Voice ID system, which is accused of analyzing and storing voiceprints without consent, BBC News reports. The Voice ID scheme, which asks callers to repeat the phrase “my voice is my password,” has collected 5.1 million audio signatures from U.K. taxpayers in a process designed to streamline security procedures and improve access to HMRC’s digital services. A spokesperson for HMRC said the system is “very popular with customers.” Big Brother Watch Director Silkie Carlo said, “These voice IDs could allow ordinary citizens to be identified by government agencies across other areas of their private lives.” Carlo has requested the voiceprints be erased.
