In considering the use of facial recognition at airports, France's data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, said the use of the technology for identity checks is “not insignificant for the rights and freedoms of the persons concerned.” The CNIL released four main principles to be observed regarding necessity, consent and maintenance of the data, saying facial recognition systems must “incorporate strong guarantees in terms of personal data protection.”
