Privacy issues surrounding the collection and use of student data—both within higher education and K-12 institutions—have grown with the advent of big data, education technology and efforts toward creating state and national databases of educational information. The demise of inBloom is a shining example of the effect privacy can have on the education industry. The IAPP Resource Center now includes Close-up: Privacy in Education with tools, guidance and research to help educational institutions navigate FERPA, COPPA and the ever-changing landscape of state legislation.
