The Court of Justice of the European Union ordered Spain to pay the European Commission 15.5 million euros and a potential daily fine thereafter for failing to transpose Directive (EU) 2016/680, the Data Protection Law Enforcement Directive. According to the CJEU's decision, Spain did not fulfill its obligations to take up the directive after being instructed to do so in a given timeframe. On top of the lump sum penalty, Spain may pay more than 89,500 euros for each day of delay on transposition following the CJEU's judgment.
