"Internet data breach hunter" Chris Vickery discusses his process of "responsible disclosure" and his mission to protect the privacy of other netizens in a feature for ZDNet. "If the companies that I inform respond well and fix things and don't just ignore me and think I'm trying to take advantage of them somehow. And if they do notify the affected people, secure it quickly, and are open about it — and they're not trying to demonize me — that's a good day," Vickery said, who recently began a job with UpGuard, a cybersecurity startup. However, Vickery acknowledges that not everyone is thrilled with his breach discoveries, often blaming him or reacting with hostility to his findings. "But it's a natural human response for some — a knee-jerk response," he said.
