In China, authorities have rolled out “gait recognition” software that utilizes artificial intelligence to identify individuals based on body shape and the way they walk, CNET reports. Supporting surveillance efforts in Beijing and Shanghai, the technology, which is reportedly supplied by Chinese tech company Watrix, can identify individuals up to 50 meters away and without analyzing their face. While the technology cannot perform in real time yet, it extracts an individual’s silhouette from a video and takes approximately 10 minutes to find a match.
