An article for Nature takes a look at how China has responded to the growing goldmine of genetic information, finding that the country is clamping down on entities that violate rules on sharing citizens’ genetic material and information. Last month, the Ministry of Science and Technology published a list of companies that broke 1998 data-sharing regulations by sharing data without permission from the ministry’s human genetic resources office. Nicholas Steneck, who studies research integrity at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, said, “At a time when transparency, open access and sharing are high priorities, enforcing the 1998 rules obviously seems to be going in the opposite direction.” He warned the rise of nationalism may lead to protectionary measures that slow the progress of science.
