In a South China Morning Post blog, Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Allan Chiang writes about big data—how it can bring great economic and other benefits, and how it can be misused. He examines ways data can be misleading or “creepy” and incidents where re-identification of individuals through their data can occur. “While the intelligent use of big data holds great promise for enriching the quality of life and enhancing productivity, consumer privacy and data protection must remain a priority,” Chiang writes, adding, “The challenge before us is how to ensure a win-win outcome by exploiting big data’s potential while addressing its downsides.”
