7News reports Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Chairman Rod Sims has indicated the commission is focused on reining in digital platforms. At the Consumer Policy Research Conference in Melbourne, Sims touched on how platforms like Facebook and Google have unprecedented access to personal data. "Few consumers are fully informed of, nor can they effectively control, how their data is collected, used and shared by digital platforms," Sims said. "Nor do they fully appreciate the extent to which their actions online are monitored and recorded for different purposes including targeted advertising." Sims also addressed the ACCC's location privacy lawsuit against Google and questioned Google's Fitbit acquisition.
