Ryerson University’s Privacy and Big Data Institute Executive Director Ann Cavoukian took the Canadian government to task for failing to properly protect Canadian metadata after the Communications Security Establishment’s breach, IT World Canada reports. “This is not some unimportant information that was released,” she said. “I was distressed that additional measures weren’t taken to ensure that before information was shared with our external partners there was no information on Canadians, metadata or otherwise.” She further contended with Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan’s belief that the breach’s “privacy impact was low,” the report states. “Metadata can be far more revealing than the actual content of communications,” she added.
