Tesla, General Motors and Toyota representatives emphasized how untimely smart-car legislation could curb safety innovation in vehicles during a Congressional hearing series on the issue, Buzzfeed reports. “We are in a period of rapid innovation for automotive safety,” said Tesla’s Diarmuid O’Connell. “Overzealous or premature regulation … can actually deter or block safety innovations.” Toyata’s Sandy Lobenstein said too much governmental interference would be superfluous, as the car industry already “came together and developed privacy principles,” placing their companies at “the forefront of protecting consumer data in the emerging Internet of Things.” Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) acknowledged that while that may be true, “a lack of accountability or standards” isn’t wise, either.
