IT World Canada asked privacy professionals for their predictions for 2019 and put a spotlight on four reports to come from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Former Ontario Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian expects “positive gains for privacy in 2019” but adds the industry must keep an eye out for issues such as encryption backdoors. Blake, Cassels & Graydon Partner Imran Ahmad expects privacy enforcement to increase with the OPC’s new investigation powers under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. The OPC is expected to release four notable reports in 2019, including on the impact the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica revelations had on Canada and a study of the privacy management practices of six data brokers in the country.
