In a mandate letter to Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Navdeep Bains, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for creating a data commissioner to oversee new regulations for better protections of personal data by large digital companies. Trudeau also tasked Bains with continuing to work “on the ethical use of data and digital tools like artificial intelligence for better government” and with appropriate authorities to establish a new set of online rights surrounding data portability, the use of personal data, and how individuals are informed and appropriately compensated when personal data is breached. “These priorities draw heavily from our election platform commitments,” Trudeau wrote in the letter.
