Over the course of the last four years, the personal records of more than 49 million Californians were put at risk, according to a new data breach report from California Attorney General Kamala Harris. Between 2012 and 2015 there were 657 reported breaches, and three out of five state residents were victims of a data breach in just 2015 alone. “Government and the private sector have a shared responsibility to safeguard consumers from threats to their privacy, finances, and personal security,” Harris said, adding, “This report clearly articulates basic steps that businesses and organizations must take to comply with the law, reduce data breaches, and better protect the public and our national security.” The report also includes recommendations for businesses to better protect personal data and maintain “reasonable security.”
