European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli issued an opinion stating privacy rights and data protection should receive stronger consideration by competition regulators when determining whether to approve a merger between two companies, Out-Law.com reports. Buttarelli believes EU merger control rules should “better reflect” consumer interests when two companies possessing large amounts of data decide to join forces. “There are now indications of greater scrutiny of proposed acquisitions of less established digital companies, which may have accumulated significant quantities of personal data that have yet to be monetized,” writes Buttarelli. “We support this and would offer the expertise of independent data authorities in advising on how to assess the significance for consumer welfare in such proposed acquisitions."
