European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli writes about why it is time for conversations about terms of service and transparency to move forward. Buttarelli cites Facebook’s decision to adjust its TOS following calls from EU regulators. While Buttarelli said it is a step in the right direction, it also “highlights the continued lack of genuine cooperation between data and consumer regulators and, where the company happens to be dominant in the market, between them and competition authorities.” Buttarelli adds the Digital Clearinghouse forum has discussed the topic of difficult terms of service and privacy policies for some time now. He concludes by stating these issues are “only the surface of a deeper issue of accountability for data practices.”
