Britain’s possible exodus from the EU would raise numerous questions about its relationship with the EU's data protection regime, Reuters reports. If the Brexit movement passes, Britain would still have to face EU rules in some capacity, the report states, and would have to negotiate with the other 27 nations if they were to leave the EU. Whether the EU would extend adequacy status to the U.K. is yet unknown, but the country's surveillance laws could be an obstacle to EU acceptance. "There is a reasonable amount of concern in some quarters in the EU about the surveillance regime in the U.K.," said Linklaters' Peter Church. The U.K. could choose the Norwegian data protection model or Switzerland's, the report states. Either way, Olswang Partner Dan Tench pointed out, "All roads lead to probably having to comply with the (EU) General Data Protection Regulation in one form or another."
