The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office has fined political organization Better for the Country Ltd, commonly known as the Leave.eu campaign, $72,345 after the campaign group allegedly sent spam text messages to more than 500,000 people, Fortune reports. The ICO found the organization’s action to be a breach of the Data Protection Act. “Political parties and campaign groups must follow the same rules as anyone else,” said ICO Head of Enforcement Stephen Eckersley. “That means they must have people’s permission before sending them text messages.” Leave.eu said it plans to appeal the ICO’s ruling.
