Brazil's Chamber of Deputies voted 436-4 in favor of a proposed amendment to the constitution to make data protection a fundamental right for all citizens. The amendment gives Brazil's federal government sole power to legislate on and supervise data protection matters. A provision to make Brazil's data protection authority, the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados, independent from the government was rejected. The amendment was originally proposed by the Senate and will return there for final approval after changes by the deputies.
