In an article for The Financial Times, BlackBerry CEO John Chen writes, “I believe now is the time for a robust discussion between policymakers and the tech sector about how much regulatory oversight is needed to protect privacy and to encourage innovation and competition.” Pointing to what he calls the “inevitable implications of a data-driven economy,” Chen writes that public awareness has reached a level that requires a response from big tech. He adds that companies should follow strict data-protection measures and that governments should apply “appropriate enforcement.” He writes, “The onus is on businesses to protect the data they manage, not exploit it.
