In the wake of the Equifax breach, bipartisan support for a federal data breach notification standard may be growing, The Hill reports. On Thursday, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, said he supports a “consistent national standard for both data security and breach notification in order to better protect our consumers, hold companies accountable, and ensure that this affair does not repeat itself.” Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said that it’s “long past time for a uniform national data security and breach notification standard.” He also said he has been working with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and a bipartisan group of senators on the issue in recent years. Hensarling said this week during opening remarks at Equifax's hearing, “This may be the most harmful failure to protect private consumer information the world has ever seen.”
