U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, support the Informing Consumers About Smart Devices Act, requiring developers of the devices to disclose microphones or cameras within products prior to purchase, PoliticoPRO reports. The bill grants enforcement powers to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which will also be in charge of creating guidelines around disclosure. Cantwell said the bill "will ensure consumers know whether their household appliances are capable of invading their privacy." A House version passed in September.
