The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Promoting Digital Privacy Technologies Act, a proposed bill to support research on privacy-enhancing technologies and promote responsible data use. The bill would direct the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program, with other relevant agencies, to “support merit-reviewed and competitively awarded research on privacy enhancing technologies” and to “accelerate the development, deployment, and adoption” of such technologies. The agencies would submit a report on research progress with policy recommendations to legislative committees within three years. Editor's note: The IAPP reported on the introduction of the bill last year.
