The Verge reports the California State Assembly is mulling Assembly Bill 2261, which would give California businesses and government entities the ability to legally deploy facial-recognition technology. Assemblyman Ed Chau, D-Calif., called his bill "the long overdue solution" to policing facial recognition. Conversely, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California is among privacy advocates lobbying against the bill, which advocates claim undermines bans on the tech throughout the state.
