Hawaii's House of Representatives is considering House Bill 125, the Uniform Employee and Student Online Privacy Protection Act. The proposed law aims to limit employers and educational institutions from freely accessing online accounts belonging to various categories of employees and students. New definitions and obligations are outlined in the law, which would take effect Dec. 25, 2040. Those in breach of the law could be subject to a $1,000 fine per violation up to $100,000 for the same incident.
