As the amount of data created by smart devices increases — 18 exabytes a month, just from mobile phones — storage vendors are getting more creative with how data is stored, how much energy is used by their boxes, and the ways companies can mine that data, reports The New York Times. “No one can look at all their data anymore,” said Scott Dietzen, CEO of Pure Storage, which makes storage devices that can hold up to 16 petabytes, while using only 4 percent of the energy of a traditional unit, thanks to flash storage technology. “They need algorithms just to decide what to look at.” While the storage industry has traditionally been relatively dull, according to the report, startups and big firms like Dell are now beginning to rethink storage architecture and insight.
