The Guardian reports Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the world wide web, is calling for more regulation on tech companies in order to prevent the internet from being “weaponised at scale.” In an open letter marking the 29th anniversary of the creation of the web, Berners-Lee cites fake profiles on social media networks, interferences with elections, and data breaches as some of the biggest problems facing the internet today. Berners-Lee said these problems have manifested due to larger tech companies possessing a large amount of power, and while those companies are taking steps to fix these issues, more work needs to be done. “A legal or regulatory framework that accounts for social objectives may help ease those tensions,” Berners-Lee said.
