Editor's Note:

This is a job posting for the newly created Bermuda Privacy Commissioner.

In 2016, the Parliament of Bermuda passed the Personal Information Protection Act. The act comes into effect later this year and covers the use of all personal information in Bermuda (in both public and private sectors). The act will help ensure that individuals have control over their information and how it is used. It will also play a major role in the development of Bermuda’s cybersecurity framework and contributes toward the further development of a successful digital economy.

The government of Bermuda is now looking to appoint an independent privacy commissioner to ensure compliance with PIPA and that the purposes of the act are being achieved. The privacy commissioner will be responsible for undertaking reviews and investigations, providing reports and developing public awareness and guidance in relation to the rights of individuals, and the obligations of organizations, under PIPA.

For this new and critically important role, we need an outstanding individual. We need someone who has a comprehensive knowledge of data protection and privacy law and its operation, as well as a strong familiarity with information and communication technologies, data processing methods and the privacy issues that can arise from their use.

In addition to these technical skills, this person will also have the ability to command the respect of both local and international stakeholders, maintain appropriate networks and establish effective relationships, and possess an appreciation for the complexities and sensitivities associated with being the first regulator of this kind in a small jurisdiction.

For more information about the role please contact Jamie Houlders (jamie.houlders@hays.com) or Andrew Timlin (andrew.timlin@hays.com) from Hays Executive.

The closing date is July 2, 2018.
