As personal data develops into an increasingly valuable business asset, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda have responded by passing comprehensive data protection laws. Cayman’s Data Protection Law is due to come into force in January 2019, while Bermuda’s Personal Information Protection Act will come into full force in December 2018. In this Privacy Tracker post, Appleby’s Peter Colegate offers a look at some main provisions and recommends ways to prepare for the coming legislation. "With fines of up to $250,000 per breach and possible imprisonment for noncompliance, organizations need to get it right — reputations and criminal liability will soon be at stake," Colegate writes.
