The Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information announced it plans to investigate Chinese bike-sharing company Mobike for potential violations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, Pymnts reports. The German regulator’s primary concern stems from the amount of information bike-sharing platforms receive from users’ mobile phones and the transfer of data outside the EU. A spokesman said in a statement to the Financial Times the agency “had already planned to launch an investigation into car- and bike-sharing companies … It is planned to request a written response from Mobike in the coming week and to request answers to a catalogue of questions.” Mobike Europe Head of Growth Steve Milton said the company will cooperate with regulators throughout the inquiry.
