Reuters reports a Belgian court late last week threatened Facebook with a $125 million fine (approximately 100 million euros) if it continued tracking consumers on third-party websites. The case was brought by Belgium's data protection authority. The court also ruled that the social media company must delete data it gathered illegally on Belgian citizens, including non-Facebook users, the report states. "Facebook informs us insufficiently about gathering information about us, the kind of data it collects, what it does with that data and how long it stores it. ... It also does not gain our consent to collect and store all this information," the court stated. Facebook said it will appeal the ruling, and Richard Allan, Facebook's vice president of public policy for Europe, Middle East, Africa, said, "We'll comply with this new law, just as we've complied with existing data protection law in Europe."
