Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains told a House of Commons committee he first learned of Statistics Canada's plan to gather citizens' financial information from the media, Global News reports. The testimony comes after a similar revelation earlier this month by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada that it had not been notified by Statistics Canada's plans. However, Bains still spoke well about the agency. “I think that Statistics Canada is a world-class statistical agency. It has a lot of respect internationally and within Canada as well … and I have a lot of confidence in the chief statistician,” Bains said.
