Australia’s Facial Verification Service, which was originally accessible by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the Australian Federal Police when it launched in November, will soon be wrapped up into the national facial recognition system and gain access to all government issued identities, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. Initially, FVS had access to passports and visas. The attorney general’s department clarified that government agencies and private businesses would be required to complete a privacy impact statement before accessing the platform. A spokesperson for the department said, "Organisations using the service would need to demonstrate their lawful basis to do so under the Privacy Act, and could only use the FVS where they gain a person's consent to use their images."
