Australia’s Notifiable Data Breaches law has now gone into effect, ZDNet reports. The new law will require any company covered by the country’s Privacy Act to alert individuals if their information was compromised in an “eligible data breach” and if they are at risk for “serious harm.” The NDB requires organizations to notify those individuals as soon as they can following an incident. Australian Information and Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim said the data breach notification law represents an important boost to privacy within the country. "Meeting privacy obligations and the expectations of the community continues to be essential. Only by demonstrating a commitment to privacy can organisations build and maintain people's trust and a social licence for innovative uses of data," Pilgrim said.
