U.S. Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill on Thursday squared off with European Commission Justice Department Director Paul Nemitz in a debate moderated by IAPP VP of Research and Education Omer Tene on the differing views of privacy enforcement in the U.S. and EU, The Register reports. “European data protection authorities are too focussed on individual cases and can’t see the bigger picture,” Brill said, adding, “If you rely entirely on complaints, you will always focus on consumer-facing companies and I think that’s a problem.” She also said that a “great data protection law is no good if you don’t enforce it.” Nemitz countered by noting the U.S. doesn’t treat EU citizens’ data equally and he discussed the Safe Harbor agreement. “The Commission wants the Safe Harbour agreement to live, but not at all costs,” he warned.
