According to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab, ASUS's software update delivered malware to nearly half a million Windows computers, Motherboard reports. The hack involved disguising malware as a “critical” software update, which was then distributed from the company’s servers. According to Kaspersky, the attack is believed to have lasted for at least five months in 2018 before it was discovered. “This attack shows that the trust model we are using based on known vendor names and validation of digital signatures cannot guarantee that you are safe from malware,” Kaspersky Lab Global Research and Analysis Team Asia-Pacific Director Vitaly Kamluk said. Highlighting the threat of supply-chain attacks, the security firm is planning to release a full technical paper on the ASUS attack at next month’s Security Analyst Summit in Singapore.
