Speaking at an Association of Southeast Nations–Australia special summit, Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton gave encrypted messaging services notice as he stated a commitment to combating terrorism, Yahoo News reports. Dutton, who now heads a department overseeing the consolidation of national security, immigration, counterterrorism, cybersecurity and border protection, reiterated the government’s commitment to combating terrorism and alleged encrypted messaging services are a great threat to its efforts in combating terrorism. While Canberra has plans to introduce legislation that would require entities to provide communication if requested, following the daylong summit, ASEAN leaders signed a memorandum of understanding, agreeing to work together to develop "best practice counter-terrorism legislation."
