Apple is utilizing the HL7’s Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources standard to enable consumers to securely access personal health information on iPhones, Health Data Management reports. Speaking at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT’s Interoperability Forum, Apple’s Clinical Informatics Lead Ricky Bloomfield said, “If any of you have an iPhone in your pocket running the latest version of iOS, you likely already have a FHIR app on it.” Bloomfield added that while Apple Health Records is “view only” data, it represents a “small but useful first step” to enable patient access to information.
