Hoping to offer stronger security features to their products, Apple has rehired a leading figure in practical cryptography, Reuters reports. Jon Callas will return to Apple following two separate stints with the tech giant. Callas has co-founded several communications companies, including PHP Corp, Silence Circle and Blackphone. Callas’ return comes as Apple continues the encryption debate with law enforcement and the federal government. While Callas is against companies being required to break into their own encrypted products, he believes a compromise proposal can be made where law enforcement officials can use a court order to take advantage of software flaws, as long as the company can fix the vulnerabilities afterward. In related news, Apple is looking for a lawyer specializing in HIPAA and health privacy regulations as the company aims to boost its health care presence.
