As the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities get set to meet in Singapore next week, they have announced that Japan is the 19th data protection authority to join the group of regulators. Formed in 1992, APPA meets regularly to discuss privacy enforcement issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Next week’s meeting marks the 45th APPA Forum, and the first time it has met in Singapore. Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission joins lead agencies in Canada, Hong Kong, Colombia, Australia, Mexico, Singapore, Korea, and Peru, along with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission, and a number of state- and province-level commissions. Editor’s Note: The IAPP Privacy Forum happens just prior to the APPA Forum, in Singapore, July 19, and features many APPA regulators.
