The Online Interest-Based Advertising Accountability Program and Children’s Advertising Review Unit referred app developer HyperBeard to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for its failure to follow the Digital Advertising Alliance’s Self-Regulatory Principles and CARU’s Self-Regulatory Guidelines. The regulatory groups focused on children’s privacy in their investigation of HyperBeard. A review of HyperBeard found the developer allowed third parties to collect data through its KleptoCats app. The groups found the data collection violated the industry standards, which included provisions based on the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. After attempts to contact HyperBeard were unsuccessful, the two regulatory units launched a joint referral to the FTC.
