A Freedom of Information request for London's transport regulator to release "anonymized" data from a four-week trial to map travel flows, demonstrates the difficulty of tracking location data without risking individual privacy, TechCrunch reports. Transport for London has assured its pilot program, which followed Wi-Fi nodes and MAC addresses of users' smartphones, would "automatically de-personalize" data. However, in an email seen by TechCrunch, it appears the TfL has turned down the FOI request, citing that it is not possible to release the data without a risk of re-identifying individuals. Yves-Alexandre de Montjoye, a lecturer in computational privacy at Imperial College’s Data Science Institute, said, “At this point we’ve seen enough examples of data sets being sold and re-identified or shared and re-identified that for large scale data-sets that are being collected claims of anonymity are dubious — or at least need to be looked at very carefully.”
