The Associated Press reports that prior to the accusation that Maria Butina was operating as a secret agent for the Russian government, she was working on a sensitive cybersecurity project as a graduate student at American University. Under the direction of her professor, who also advised the State Department on cybersecurity matters, Butina participated on a project carried out for Internews, a nonprofit that works with the U.S. to support the free flow of information in dangerous parts of the world, including Russia. The AP reports that the access granted through her time spent as a graduate student underlines the close relationship between academia and the government. In this instance, it is also reported that all institutions expected someone else to vet Butina, though the university explained it doesn’t do background checks.
